A Venerable Institution

A lot of us talk about speed of our lives. We move from one activity to another and the resultant stress takes a toll on our bodies. Surely one of the reasons for this is the fact that we try and cram up as many things to do in one 24 hour day and this multi tasking is probably not something that we as human beings were really designed to do well.

In India however, we are helped in beating this stress by one incredible government institution. This venerable institution which is as old as the country itself has ensured that we will be forced to reduce the amount of work we can do in a day. The resultant reduction in stress has ensured many a healthy Indian and specially many a healthy Mumbaite.

Before you lose your mind wondering which Government of India institution has worked so well for its citizens let me tell you that I am referring to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Yes the BMC which is responsible for the upkeep of our roads. With great kindness and wisdom the BMC has ensured that the contractors do not do a good job of our roads and actually riddle them with potholes.                                                                        

Now, before you think that I have lost my mind let me explain. These potholes ensure that what should have been a 30 min journey from my house takes at least  1 hour 30 minutes. There are long periods of time during the journey where I am forced to be at standstill doing nothing. This forces me to slow down my life, do less work during the day, sort out things in my mind when the traffic is at standstill and in general reduces the forced efficiency of this modern day life. This results in greater clarity in my work, allows out of the box thinking and in general allows me to stare into the distance doing nothing in general.

And I think all of us undervalue the benefits of doing nothing for long periods of time. This experience twice during the day has helped a lot of Mumbaites and I really urge all of you to talk to your respective government bodies/Mayors to come to Mumbai and learn the tricks of trade from BMC.

Finally, I will talk about my position in the markets. I am long and hopefully will not have to trade today!                                       Probable Trades
