I have stopped making New Year Resolutions a long time ago. But, Traderman is still just 5 years past his MBA. He has not yet learned from experience. So he continues to make some resolutions every year. I decided to check his Diary and this is what I found.
"Dear Diary, Like every year, I want to start this year with some resolutions. Unlike other people, resolutions are, for me, a way of setting goals and measuring my achievements at the end of the year. While the profits I make in trading are quantifiable, other achievements can only be measured if I know what I set out to achieve in the first place. Resolutions are therefore a way to focus my attention through the year. Whenever I find myself at a loss for things to do or find myself drifting, I can always come back and see my resolutions for the year. Nothing I do, Dear Diary, not even writing resolutions, is for just fun! There is a deep thought behind this process. (No wonder I am on the verge of a quantum leap in my career! That will allow me to overtake all my batch-mates who are taking small and regular steps up the corporate ladder) They laugh at me now. We will see who has the last laugh Muuuwaahahahaha.
1] I resolve to do a thing that very few people have tried in their lives. That will give me a big boost in my confidence. (Not that I need it. I am very aware of my incredible skills) But years of using only my (incredible) mind has made me ignore my physical body. I resolve to become physically fit this year. No, don't worry Diary. I will not waste time daily doing physical exercises. I will try one of those instant fat reduction ads that keep coming in the papers these days. A physically fit me with my incredible mind will be an irresistible combination!
2] I resolve NOT to improve my trading systems. No it is not as if my trading systems cannot be improved upon. They are great but I know that there exists a small probability that they can be improved. Last year, however, I wasted a lot of time thinking of new systems. The moment I get a new idea, I then have to test it. It means writing the code, running the program, testing results. If the results are NOT good then it is great. But if the system test results are good, then I have a big headache. I have to worry whether to replace one of my current systems or whether to add this to my systems I trade. If I decide to add, then there is a problem. I have to decide what weight to give the new system. And then I have to see whether the new system works well as a combination with my current systems! Just imagine all the trouble Diary. Best thing to do is to nip all this in the bud and not think of a new system at all. I will just go with the current ones.
3] But look at my intelligence Diary. I know that if I stick to my resolution number 2 I will have too much time in my hands with nothing to do. I therefore resolve to learn a new language in this year. I will buy a lot of the Audio CDs you get and put it on when the market is in progress. This is like killing two birds with one stone. I get to learn the language and at the same time pass the boring hours of the market. I will either learn French or Mandarin... or maybe both who knows. Even I do not know the full limits of my ability. Wait! I have to account for my incredible ability and buy the CDs of a third language, say German, too. I might need it if I finish with French and Mandarin too fast.
4] With, the physical fitness due to Resolution number 1 and the language skills due to resolution number 3 and my innate intelligence, humor and overall personality I will be a chick magnate. I however, resolve to resist all temptation. I am a one woman man. I resolve to continue to pursue Sonia until she sees the light and agrees to be with me!!
Reading this leaves me speechless. I have to admit one thing. For all his inabilities, Traderman does not lack in one thing i.e. confidence. If only, I was that confident about everything!
In any case, coming back to my own trading system and my position, I am short ( do not feel good about this today) I will cut my short positions and go long if Nifty futures crosses 4710
